Thomas Construction Group was delighted when the YMCA Board of Directors selected us to serve as construction manager for the rebuilding of the Market Street facility. The YMCA is such an important pillar of our community, positively impacting thousands of men, women and children of all ages and abilities. The original building was heavily damaged in a fire in February of 2015.
In addition to replacing what was lost, the new facility has significantly expanded the YMCA’s community offerings, including spacious exercise areas, a new aquatics center, a kids’ adventure area, space for an enhanced youth programs, a commercial grade teaching kitchen, gathering spaces, new administration areas, an improved full-size gymnasium, and much more. In addition to a new facility and increased membership enrollments, the nonprofit has seen participation in many of its programs grow, including childcare and classes on diabetes prevention, according to Sara Gibbs, financial development and marketing director for the local YMCA. The indoor pool facility was able to stay operational during construction and renovation. Designed by Bowman Murray Hemingway Architects to be open and filled with light, the new design fulfills the vision of providing Wilmington with a YMCA that is truly state of the art.
