ECU Health Behavioral Health Hospital

Healthcare

Thomas Construction Group served as Construction Manager for the new ECU-Health Behavioral Health Hospital, a 144-bed, 114,000-square-foot facility that will significantly expand access to behavioral health services across eastern North Carolina.

Located less than a mile from ECU Health Medical Center, this state-of-the-art behavioral health hospital was developed through a joint venture between ECU Health and Acadia Healthcare. Designed by Stengel Hill Architecture, the hospital was built to meet the highest standards of safety, durability, and patient-centered design.

Thomas led all phases of the project – from early preconstruction and budgeting through site development and vertical construction – coordinating complex utility relocations, foundation systems, and extensive mechanical and electrical infrastructure required for a modern behavioral health environment. The facility incorporates secure patient units, therapy and activity spaces, nurse stations, treatment areas, and support services, each constructed with an emphasis on durability, safety, and a calming aesthetic to support healing.

Close collaboration with the design team and ownership partners ensured seamless communication and efficient decision-making throughout construction. Thomas’ field leadership team maintained a rigorous schedule, managing multiple subcontractor trades while navigating supply chain challenges to keep the project on track and within budget.

Beyond its clinical purpose, the hospital will serve as a training site for medical students and residents through the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University – strengthening the behavioral health workforce in the region. Open in November 2025, the ECU Health Behavioral Health Hospital stands as a landmark project that reflects Thomas Construction Group’s expertise in healthcare construction and commitment to building environments that improve lives.

The ECU Health Behavioral Health Hospital was honored with the ABC 2025 Excellence in Construction Merit Award, recognizing the project’s complexity, collaboration, and impact on behavioral health care across eastern North Carolina. This award reflects the disciplined processes, innovation, and teamwork that helped bring this vital facility to life.
