Carolina Dunes Behavioral Health

Healthcare

Carolina Dunes Behavioral Health is a 50,500 SF I-2 mental health hospital designed with patient needs at the forefront, delivering quality behavioral health care to individuals and families throughout coastal North Carolina. The facility provides group counseling, family and recreational therapy, educational services, and vocational training, with specialized programs offering 24/7 treatment for substance abuse, depression, grief, and other mental health conditions, as well as acute geriatric behavioral health care for seniors and their families.

As part of a new renovation project, Thomas Construction Group is upgrading four wings within the existing, operational facility to enhance safety, functionality, and therapeutic space. Former “day rooms” are being transformed into modern nurse stations with dedicated medication rooms, and one bedroom in each wing is being converted into a group therapy room. Staff support areas — including the break room, locker areas, and restrooms — are receiving complete finish and fixture updates. Seclusion and ante rooms are being modernized for improved safety, and patient bedrooms and restrooms across three wings will receive targeted upgrades such as new flooring, base, finishes, doors, and hardware. The renovation also includes reconstructing the main corridor nurse station with new countertops, laminate surfaces, glazing, and millwork to improve workflow and visibility.

Thomas Construction Group partnered with Strategic Behavioral Health to deliver the original purpose-built facility — one of 19 projects completed together across nine states — and continues that partnership through this renovation, reinforcing a shared commitment to creating safe, supportive, and therapeutic environments for recovery and wellness.
